If a data item with a custom sort includes a value that is greater than 256 characters, then you see errors when you try to use the data item, and when you open the Edit Custom Sort dialog box. The errors depend on your release of SAS Visual Analytics. There is no workaround that enables you to use a value that is greater than 256 characters in a custom sort.
If you try to add the data item with the custom sort to an object, you see a red X in the lower right corner of the object and the tooltip contains this error:
